A Thought on Veteran’s Day

At the beginning, middle, and end of the day, we are ultimately in the business of celebrating safety.

Whether emotionally, socially, psychologically, and of course physically, when humans of all walks of life can feel at ease in each others company, collective health and wellness is that much more possible.

National wellness, over the decades, has often come with a sobering National sacrifice.

Today, perhaps more than in years passed, the privilege we all share to have a foundation of safety hundreds of years in the making is something worth taking note of.

Created as a commemoration of the soldier’s sacrifice on the heels of a World War I victory, the magnitude of that sacrifice weighed heavy - 320,000 young men in fact.

Veterans then and now, spanning all the global conflicts that have followed continue to shoulder the weight of conflict on our behalf.

At times preserving peace. At times containing chaos.

Then, after all the dust settles and our collective attention moves on to the relative comforts of a Nation at ease, the Veteran’s real battle begins. To rediscover a sense safety of their own.

So today, we honor the fact that we are a Nation protected by one another and that when all is said and done and when our many differences fade, what’s left is a deep appreciation for the total strangers who step in and up to protect a thing called safety.

Lifeguard's, it turns out, have always been on duty.
