Maple Grove Hot Springs and Retreat Center is a 60 acre, fully off-grid eco center along the Bear River and Oneida Narrows Reservoir.  We offer 4 hot spring pools, a 30’ group retreat yurt, glamping accommodations in yurts, canvas, cabins for over 30 guests, riverfront beach, hiking trails, paddle board/kayak rentals, reception lodge/bathhouse, and more.

Overview

The Farm and Garden Manager will be responsible for the comprehensive planning, coordination, and execution of all activities related to Maple Grove’s future in educational farming and community garden spaces. This includes overseeing sustainable agricultural practices, managing staff and volunteers, coordinating community engagement and educational programs, and ensuring the productivity and health of all growing areas. This is a leadership role requiring a strong background in organic farming, team management, and community outreach.

Commitment:          Minimum 15-20 hrs/week

Work Schedule:       Flexible, some weekends, a dynamic mix of remote and onsite time.

Farm and Garden Operations

  • Develop and implement annual crop plans, including variety selection, planting schedules, soil fertility management, and integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for both the farm and community garden plots.

  • Oversee all cultivation tasks: seeding, transplanting, weeding, irrigation, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.

  • Manage and maintain all farm infrastructure, including tools, equipment, greenhouse, irrigation systems, and storage facilities.

  • Ensure adherence to organic and sustainable farming standards.

  • Manage record-keeping for yields, sales, expenses, and operational inputs.

Staff and Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and manage part-time staff, interns, and seasonal employees.

  • Develop and lead effective training programs and daily work plans for volunteers.

  • Foster a positive, safe, and educational working environment for all staff and volunteers.

  • Conduct regular performance reviews and provide mentorship to agricultural staff.

 

Community Engagement and Education

  • Act as the primary liaison between the farm/garden and the local community.

  • Coordinate and lead workshops, educational programs, and tours focused on sustainable agriculture, gardening, and healthy eating for diverse age groups.

  • Manage the community garden program, including plot assignments, rule enforcement, and providing technical assistance to community gardeners.

  • Manage distribution channels, which may include onsite dining, guest and staff consumption and donations to local food banks.

Administration and Financial Management

  • Develop and manage the annual farm and garden budget.

  • Track and report on all expenditures and revenues.

  • Procure seeds, supplies, and equipment within the allocated budget.

  • Assist in grant writing and fundraising efforts related to farm and garden initiatives.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and labor regulations.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience managing a small- to medium-scale farm or intensive market garden, preferably using organic or sustainable practices.

  • Proven experience in staff and volunteer supervision, training, and management.

  • Strong knowledge of soil science, crop rotation, pest and disease management, and greenhouse management.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) for interacting with staff, community members, and stakeholders.

  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining standard agricultural equipment and tools.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Physical ability to perform manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions, including lifting up to 50 lbs.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, Environmental Science, or a related field.

  • Experience in developing and leading agricultural education programs or workshops.

  • Experience with budget management and financial reporting for a farm enterprise.

  • Familiarity with local food systems and community outreach best practices.

  • Work remotely as needed, Salt Lake City/Logan preferred but not required
